Giving Every Child a Healthy Start to Life!
Every year nearly 11 million children die before reaching their fifth birthday and most of them during their first year of life. More than half are due to acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, measles, malaria, and HIV/AIDS. In addition, malnutrition underlies 54% of all deaths. ‘The Global Burden of Disease’ indicates that these conditions will continue to be major contributors to child deaths unless significant efforts are made to control them. UNICEF and WHO developed the integrated management of child-hood illness (IMCI) strategy. At the core of this strategy is the integrated case management of the most common childhood problems seen in low and middle-income countries, including important disease prevention and health promotion elements, such as immunization and nutrition counseling. The immunization outreach for vulnerable children is a practical implementation of this strategy.
Goal of this initiative: Ensure well-being of vulnerable children by active immunization
