Dedication of the Gandhi Memorial

A very special moment this Gandhi Jayanthi as the city came together to witness the dedication of the Gandhi Memorial at Pothanur. 97 year old Padma Bhushan Krishnammal Jagannathan dedicated the memorial to the nation and delivered a special address. Under the leadership of Dr.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar a team worked for over a year to make this memorial a reality. Shanti Ashram had the honour to be part of this team and host Krishnammal Amma.

It is in the central building of the memorial that Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visit to Coimbatore, it is here that the foundation for the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya was laid by Gandhiji when the first boys were brought on by Avinashilingam Ayyah for education. The Memorial is a generous making of the G.D.Family and the G.D charities.
To Dr.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar and the G.D family, the citizens of Coimbatore remain grateful for a wonderful addition to the city’s landscape, a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.
